Episode 18: SEASON 1 Finale! With Former Congressman Chris Gibson (NY-19)

THIS IS IT! Season 1 Finale episode is here. We have had quite a run this first season. We’ve had some awesome guests and talked about some important issues. Thanks to everyone who came on the show or listened to the show or left us a rating and review for making this an awesome inaugural season. Don't stop now though - keep leaving us those ratings and reviews as we prep for Season 2!

And if you haven’t seen on social media, our first event in 2019 will be a LIVE show with the New York State Health Foundation in NYC! We’ll be there on Tuesday, January 8th at 1 PM. Get your tickets here!

Andrea's new favorite beverage: Harvest Spirits Applejack Reserve

Roger has been hitting the mat on the Community Grid fight in Syracuse. Read more about it here.

Andrea will be headed to the Student Veterans of America National Conference!

Mark your calendars for NY American Legion’s mid-winter conference, January 25-27, near Andrea’s neck of the woods in Colonie.

Syracuse University and IVMF have announced the first-ever Veterans Writing Award.

There will be a Joint House-Senate VA Committee Hearing to review implementation of the VA MISSION Act. The law allows veterans to seek medical care outside of exclusively VA facilities. Undoubtedly, members of Congress will also ask about other recent, high-profile foibles like the GI Bill housing stipend scandal and their basic inability to provide and sustain a functioning IT architecture. We’ll be watching - and remembering - how VA plans to do health care IT different for veterans than they have for the GI Bill and other benefits.

The Senate is still struggling to clear a House-passed, bipartisan measure to extend benefits related to Agent Orange exposure to Vietnam veterans who served offshore.

The so-called Blue Water bill is currently held up under objections from GOP senators Mike Lee of Utah and Michael B. Enzi of Wyoming, who have concerns about the costs of the bill’s implementation and the science behind determining whether veterans who served on ships were exposed to Agent Orange. Spoiler alert: they were.

Let’s compare and contrast: Lee and Enzi have no problem voting for billions of dollars in tax handouts to the already-wealthy that add trillions to our national deficit. But the moment actual veterans who are suffering actual negative health effects come forward to get access to care? Suddenly, “it’s too expensive.”

We hope all of our Utah and Wyoming listeners will give their Senators an earful. Even if you’re not one of their constituents - call their offices and do not stop. Luckily, Senate VA Committee Chairman Johnny Isakson of Georgia is committed to bringing the bill to the floor for a vote. But if it can’t be done by Friday, when the 115th Congress is scheduled to adjourn for the final time, veterans will have to start all over again from square one next year.

Happy Belated Birthday to the National Guard, founded in 1636!

Congratulations to the Black American National Security & Foreign Policy Next Generation Leaders, including several in or connected to Upstate NY!

Our Guest: former Congressman Chris Gibson (NY-19)

Chris Gibson has over thirty-five years of distinguished public service. He has spent the last six years as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives (NY-19). He also spent twenty-nine years in the U.S. Army, where he rose to the rank of colonel and commanded the 82nd Airborne Division's 2nd Brigade. He served four combat tours in Iraq and was awarded four Bronze Star Medals and the Purple Heart.

He's also a Mets and a Jets fan, so cut him some slack.
