As we mourn the loss of Vice Admiral Scott Stearney, a reminder:
It's the holiday season. It isn't always a time of joy and peace for all. More women and men who have worn the cloth of this nation will think of harming themselves during these weeks than any other time of the year
We're asked frequently on the show about what people can do to curb the rate of veteran suicides in America. A few thoughts:
Prejudice is harmful. This includes assuming veterans are either broken basket cases or stoic warriors without blemish. The veteran identity isn't owned or completely accurately portrayed by either Hollywood or 24/7 opinion channels.
Community is redemptive. And community can be as big or as small as we make it. Community can be a few friends coming together to talk about service. It can be a village that reaches out and makes a place for its returning veterans.
There is no panacea when it comes to preventing veteran suicide, except - wait, yes there is:
Be a good neighbor. Be a good human being. Reach out and bring in someone new into your life, free from judgment and scorn.
Be a good person this holiday season. Help save a veteran.
If you're a veteran and you're not sure where to turn:
-Call 1-800-273-8255 and Press 1 -Send a text message to 838255 -Go to http://VeteransCrisisLine.net and http://MakeTheConnection.net
You, your service, and your life are worth it - always.
Finally - we talked about the GI Bill disaster(s). So many items to read up here:
